Most people that travel to Australia start their adventure on the east coast. A fair amount of those people don’t even see the west coast. It’s a real backpackers’ classic to cross the coast from south to north or vice versa, from Sydney to Cairns, or the other way around. Western Australia is much less populated; there is no public transport, and therefore much harder to travel around.
Rottnest Island was one of the main reasons I started my Australian trip in Western Australia and not the more tourists east coast. The island has been on my list way before I could have imagined going on a world journey. Getting to the island only takes a short ferry from Fremantle harbour, just outside Perth.
Fremantle
Accommodation on the island is very costly, so I can only spend one day on Rottnest Island. To save time, I have already moved to a Fremantle hostel today. This way, it’s easy leaving early tomorrow morning.
Walking around Fremantle, I got to explore the harbour, the old prison and the coastline. It didn’t take long to find myself in the water again, enjoying this great weather. I’m sorry for my Belgian readers, as I know it’s winter. It’s just too good not to share.
I was surprised by some of the people I met at the hostel in Perth. They knew I was changing to the hostel in Fremantle, and some of them changed when I returned in the evening. Fremantle is only a train away from the city of Perth. But, still, I love all these last-minute decisions that everybody makes. It’s a lifestyle, for sure. It takes some time to get used to it, but it’s best once you are in it.
