I have a dog! Or, at least the hostel where I am staying at.. | Medan | Vlog 166

I could have stayed longer in Bukit Lawang. In fact, I could have stayed longer in Sumatra as a whole. I wasn’t fully convinced at first, but after exploring and travelling around for almost eight weeks in Indonesia, I really started to fall in love with the place. Unfortunately, with only three days left in Medan, the journey is slowly coming to an end.

I had to pick a date to fly to Australia. Since I left Belgium on the first of January — exactly six months ago — starting a new chapter on the first of July just felt like the right moment and a fitting opportunity.

Plus, flights from Kuala Lumpur were much cheaper than from any other nearby destination. I’m not sad about returning to Malaysia; there are still plenty of things I want to do there. Still, after eight weeks in Indonesia, it’s hard not to feel attached.

Eight weeks in Indonesia

Luckily, my eight weeks in Indonesia weren’t over yet — and before starting my final three days in Medan, I first had to get there. After spending days deep in the rainforest, I was exhausted and ready for a good rest.

In the morning, I had a banana pancake. I haven’t mentioned this before, but it’s easily the best breakfast option everywhere. Every hostel seems to love their banana pancakes — and even more than that, they love making them for tourists (and their money).

During breakfast, I looked for the cheapest way back to Medan but couldn’t be bothered in the end and called a taxi instead. I just wanted to get there quickly. Once I arrived, I took a short stroll through a local park, but soon returned to the hostel to enjoy some quiet me-time.

As for my hostel — now that was something special. It might just be one of the best I’ve ever stayed in. I’m sure I loved it even more because I was the only guest. The place was brand new, spotless, and beautifully designed. Honestly, I could live there. And the best surprise? They had a dog. He quickly became my best friend for the rest of the evening.
