I walked around Berastagi and climbed the active volcano Mount Sibayak. Since climbing the other volcano here was impossible, I decided to leave for my next destination.
From Berastagi, I had to get to Medan first to book private transport to Bukit Lawang. A long day of travelling, but Bukit Lawang centres in the middle of the Sumatra rain forest, and I could not let that slide. It’s those destinations that I like the most.
Next destination: Bukit Lawang:
With the high price of an eight-hour private drive to Bukit Lawang, I decided to take public transport into Medan first. Berastagi lies on a busy road, so finding a bus was easy. Although, since it was the weekend here, everybody wanted to get to Medan. Therefore, most buses were overcrowded. With overcrowded, I waited two hours for the first bus where I didn’t have to sit on the roof.
That we had 25 people in a small van by the time we reached Medan wasn’t my biggest worry. Most people were amiable and even stood up for me when the driver asked for more money because I’m a ‘white man’. I was happy to pay the extra, but the locals didn’t allow me.
Once I reached Medan, I could call a company, and not much later, we were driving to Bukit Lawang. Due to having a flat tire, it was super late when we reached Bukit Lawang. For dinner, I went dining at the best place in town. I deserved it after this whole day of travelling through Indonesia.
The day after, I could finally start exploring Bukit Lawang and arrange things for my trek through the rainforest. I made an itinerary for myself, so I needed a guide instead of a guided tour. I got sent from place to place, and eventually, they put me together with a french guy that wanted to make a similar journey! Let the journey begin!
