I’m getting closer to arriving in Melbourne, now only a week away. Over the last months, I’ve sometimes felt tired of constantly moving and seeing new things every day. But now that I’m about to settle down and work in Australia, these travels feel like a holiday again — a holiday from both working and travelling. After all this time surrounded by nature in the Cameron Highlands, it’ll definitely be strange to step into a big city again.
I know, it’s the biggest first-world problem ever — and it feels just as ridiculous to me. But that feeling also pushes me to make the very best of the days I have left. Before heading to the city, my plan for today is to enjoy more of nature here in the Cameron Highlands! It’s hard to believe that after six months on the move, this journey is about to come to an abrupt end.
Nature in the Cameron Highlands
To give myself a little break from hiking, I took a taxi in the morning to check out some of the best viewing spots around. A few days ago, a guy I met at the hostel had recommended them. (Ironically, he ended up not doing any of the hikes himself!)
The views were nice, but honestly, I’d seen better ones during my walks over the past few days, so I headed back to the hostel. Nature in the Cameron Highlands isn’t about riding in a taxi — it’s about getting back out there on the jungle trails!
On my way out again, I met a Danish girl with the same plan. She was ready to take on the toughest hike. Perfect timing — neither of us had to go alone. We had a great time exploring the mossy forest together and rewarded ourselves with a coffee and a snack afterwards.
We also stopped by some strawberry farms before heading back. Once I returned, I still had one final hike left to complete all ten. So I kept going — but not before taking a quick laundry and haircut break. Better to get that done here in Asia, where it’s much cheaper than it will be in Melbourne.
It was already dark when I made it back to the hostel, where a bunch of new travellers had arrived. They seemed like a fun group, so the Danish girl and I joined them for a chat. I was supposed to leave tomorrow after finishing all ten hikes — but now it looks like I’ll stay one more day to take the new crew out on another trail as their unofficial guide.
