I fell with the scooter, and all the people did was take pictures! | Banyuwangi | Vlog 142 and 143

My last two days in Java were slightly different than anticipated. I got a little too confident about my travels providing for themselves. After Mount Bromo yesterday, we arrived in Banyuwangi. The itinerary spread out over two days were the Alas Purwo National Park and the Kawah Ijen volcano. This volcano is famous for erupting electric-blue fire that trickles down the mountain slope. I had Mount Ijen planned for my last day before travelling to Bali. The electric blue lights up during the night would have been unforgettable on my last night here.

Unfortunately, my motorbike and I missed a bend on the two-hour drive to the Alas Purwo National Park, known for its beautiful rainforest scenery and white surf beaches. I never even made it to the National Park itself.

Luckily, a truck full of workers passed by and picked us up. They loaded the bike onto the truck and drove to a nearby doctor. Now, it sounds beneficial, which it was, but on the way to the doctor, they couldn’t be bothered with my leg and arms bleeding. The guys just all wanted to take some pictures with us. Although, once we got to the doctor, they fixed the bike, hung around for a while, and then left. I’ll forgive them for their obsessions with getting pictures of us. It was better than nothing, and I’m very thankful for the help.

After the doctor, I still had to drive the motorbike back to Banyuwangi. I guess it was a good thing, as I otherwise wouldn’t have wanted to go on a motorbike again. But at the time, it sucked pretty severely! My Kawah Ijen volcano day started like the day before, only to be very sore from the accident. With pain in my heart and legs, I cancelled my trip to the volcano.

There was nothing to do about it, and we spent the day in Banyuwangi sitting in the hostel. It could have been worse, and in the end, we are not the first travellers in Indonesia to crash with a motorbike. It’s a tradition, and the scars will always remind me of these travels. It’s all about looking at the positive sides.
