Exploring Southeast Asia’s oldest gardens | Bogor | Vlog 125

I spy with my little eye something that has the colour green and begins with the letter B. It also is in the middle of the centre of Bogor, so it is hard to miss. Besides, it’s a perfectly sunshiny day, which would be the best day to visit!

On the itinerary today? The Bogor Botanical Gardens! It was a relaxed day for me, except that these Botanical Gardens were pretty big and took me the whole day to explore. That was great because I didn’t have any other plans for today. When I was reading about the Botanical gardens of Bogor on the plane from Sydney to Jakarta, it was described as an excellent day trip from Jakarta. And it indeed was!

Bogor Botanical Gardens

The Bogor Botanical gardens were founded in 1817. It was an order from the government of the Dutch East Indies to build it. The park, which covers an area of 87 hectares, contains about 14,000 different plants and trees of various origins.

Geographically, the position of Bogor means plenty of rainfall. It even rains daily in the dry season, unseen in the region. Not as great for the people living here but very advantageous for cultivating tropical plants. In addition, the garden is the oldest in Southeast Asia! The original name for Bogor itself is Buitenzorg. That’s because it used to serve as the governor’s summer residence for the governours.

On my third day and second destination in Indonesia, my travels here are slowly finding a direction. Between all the trips, I spent time making sure to catch everything. It was a last-minute decision to come here, and I didn’t prepare for this trip.

On top of that, I’m trying out some alternative travelling styles. Who knows where the rest of these Indonesian travels will get me? I’ve had enough going from highlight to highlight and trying to do the in-betweens.
