We’re halfway through the Great Ocean Walk, and today the trail takes us from Aire River to Johanna Beach. The campsite at Johanna Beach is said to have one of the best views along the entire route, so we’re eager to get there. But first comes a 14 km stretch — one of the more challenging days of the walk. We’ll have to earn those views, but we’re ready for it!
We planned our day the night before and woke up right on schedule. After breakfast in the tent, we took a moment to relax beside the river. The morning was beautiful, and we spotted several koalas in the trees around us. Our bodies have completely adjusted to the rhythm of the trail, and with renewed energy, we set off for another rewarding day of walking.
The trail was full of surprises today. It went steeply up and down most of the time, and our legs quickly felt the burn. Each climb, though, came with breathtaking views that made every step worth it. Around the halfway point, we met Claire — a backpacker from the United States hiking the route on her own. We started chatting on the beach and soon decided to continue walking together toward Johanna Beach. Having company made the day even better, and together we kept our eyes open for an echidna along the way.
Today’s section stayed close to the coastline almost the entire way, offering endless views of the ocean. Eventually, we arrived at Johanna Beach, and it was every bit as stunning as promised. Our campsite sits atop a cliff overlooking the beach, stretching as far as the eye can see. It was a perfect evening — the three of us shared stories until the cold finally drove us inside. Moments like this remind us exactly why we set out on this walk in the first place.
