Over the past few days, I’ve been exploring the town of Pangandaran, which may well become the highlight of my trip to Java. On the first day, I explored the region devastated by the 2006 Pangandaran earthquake and tsunami. The following two days were filled with adventure – a personalised river tour through the rainforest and a boat tour to the stunning Green Canyon. Now, I’m heading to my next destination: Yogyakarta. This vibrant city in central Java is renowned for its classical Javanese fine arts and culture. It’s also home to a thriving student population with dozens of schools and universities. Based on my itinerary, Yogyakarta has the potential to rival Pangandaran as the highlight of my Java journey. Let the adventure begin – today, we’re starting with a visit to Mount Merapi!
The day begins with public transport as we’re relocating once again. First, a taxi takes me to one of the bus stops on the outskirts of town. Then, a bus journey to another terminal where I catch yet another taxi to my hostel in Yogyakarta. Despite the complex route, we successfully make it. After dropping my backpack at the hostel, I’ll spend the rest of the day exploring Mount Merapi by jeep.
Mount Merapi
Mount Merapi translates to Fire Mountain and is an active stratovolcano. It holds the distinction of being the most active volcano in Indonesia, having erupted regularly since 1548. Due to its high activity level, we received a safety briefing before our trip – a precaution in case the volcano should erupt during our visit.
Smoke often billows from the mountaintop, requiring us to wear face masks during our visit. In addition to exploring the volcano and its surroundings, we’ll also visit Muntilan. This town was tragically wiped off the map in a devastating volcanic explosion on 22 November 1994, claiming 27 lives. Mount Merapi’s most recent major eruption occurred in 2010, resulting in 353 deaths and forcing 350,000 people to evacuate their homes.
