I’m exploring Medan on a Hello Kitty scooter! #lifegoals | Vlog 167

After more than a week living in the middle of the rainforest at Bukit Lawang, I arrived in Medan. It’s one of the largest cities in Indonesia and the capital of Sumatra. It’s also my final stop before heading back to Malaysia.

It felt good to take a moment to slow down. I didn’t do much when I arrived yesterday; I just wanted some quality time for myself, which is an essential part of travelling. Long journeys can be mentally and physically challenging, so this little break was welcome. Besides, my hostel here is one of the best I’ve stayed in on this trip, and I was more than happy to relax there.

Medan

Today was different — I was out early to explore my itinerary. My day in one of Indonesia’s biggest cities started at the Vihara Maha Maitreya, one of the largest Buddhist temples in the country. It’s a major place of worship and a beautiful religious attraction in Medan. I took my time walking around, exploring its gardens and small pools, and then had lunch at a nearby restaurant before heading to the Kesawan district. This area, full of historic buildings, is the oldest street in Medan and full of character.

Another highlight was the Graha Maria Annai Velangkanni, also known as Our Lady of Good Health Church. Open to the public since 2005, its design is quite the optical illusion. Although it’s a Catholic church, it’s modelled after an Indian temple, decorated with vibrant colours and intricate effigies. It’s a perfect example of Medan’s cultural diversity.

To round off that theme, I also visited a mosque — the Mesjid Raya Al Mashun, Medan’s main mosque and one of its most beautiful landmarks. Built with imported materials such as Italian marble, it’s impressive to walk through and examine its details. The stained glass windows, emerald-green tiles, and black-topped domes make it a fascinating and elegant place to visit. as Italian marble and is a fantastic place to walk around and check all the details. Other noticeable things are the stained windows, the emerald green tiles and the blacktopped domes.
