After more than a week of living in the middle of the rainforest at Bukit Lawang, I came to Medan. It’s one of the biggest cities in Indonesia and, on top of that, the capital of Sumatra. It is also my last stop before heading back to Malaysia.
It is good to wind down for a moment. I didn’t do much when I got here yesterday. I just wanted quality time, which is an essential part of travelling. The journey can be mentally and physically robust on your body. Besides, my hostel here is one of the best I’ve had on this trip, so I was more than happy to stay home.
Medan:
Today was different; I was out early to get through my itinerary. My day in one of the biggest cities in Indonesia started with one of the largest Buddhist temples in Indonesia. The Vihara Maha Maitreya is an essential place of worship and a critical religious attraction in Medan. I walked around, ensuring I saw everything, including its cute little in-house gardens and pools and afterwards, I went to the local restaurant to have lunch before heading to the Kesawan district. This district is full of historic buildings and is the oldest street in Medan.
Another essential stop today was the Graha Maria Annai Velangkanni or Our Lady of Good Health Church. The building has been open to the public since 2005, and its design is an optical illusion. Besides being a Catholic church, it is modelled on an Indian temple with plenty of elegant and colourful effigies on show. The church is an excellent example of Medan’s diversity.
Afterwards, I even went to a Mosque to prove that diversity point. The Mesjid Raya Al Mashun is Medan’s main mosque and one of its prettiest. It is built out of imported materials such as Italian marble and is a fantastic place to walk around and check all the details. Other noticeable things are the stained windows, the emerald green tiles and the blacktopped domes.
