It is my third and final day in Bandung. This city is famous for its colonial and art-deco architecture. Besides, many people come here for their shopping. My sightseeing tour in Bandung started with the markets and the Jalan Braga. After yesterday’s road trip through western Java, exploring the side trips out of Bandung, I’ll stay a bit closer to ‘home’ today.
Jalan Braga is what you can call the shopping street. It is full of cafes and stores that have been this way since the colonial era. The street is next to City Hall Park, the most famous park in the centre, full of fountains and cute little gardens. Afterwards, I went to see the Gedung Sate, a 1920’s Dutch colonial building. Back then, it was used as the seat of the Dutch East Department, but now it is the home of the governor of the West Java province.
Sightseeing in Bandung
I planned a little trip out to one of the giant strawberry plantations around Bandung in the afternoon. But, since I would meet my driver at the Alun-Alun Kota, I went there first. The Alun Kota is the most iconic square in the city and a famous gathering place for locals. Besides, it is next to the Masjid Raya, a Mosque famous for its twin minarets and the biggest one in the city.
There was still one thing on my itinerary after the strawberry plantation (a trip that took longer than I had expected). A sightseeing trip in Bandung wouldn’t be the same without visiting their memorial to the liberation struggle. My last stop was the Monumen Perjuangen Rakyat Jawa Barat. The park around the monument was huge. I would have loved to explore this a little deeper if it wasn’t for the rain. Luckily, I brought my rain jacket, but I felt terrible about my driver waiting to drive me home. Since it had already been a great day, I returned to my warm homestay.
