Last week, while travelling around Victoria, I finally ticked off a small childhood dream that’s been quietly waiting in the back of my mind for years. I hopped on a bus in Melbourne heading down to Aireys Inlet, right along the stunning Great Ocean Road, to visit the one and only Split Point Lighthouse.
The Split Point Lighhouse name probably doesn’t ring any bells, but trust me — you’ve likely seen it before. This is the Round the Twist lighthouse, star of that gloriously bizarre, iconic Australian kids’ series so many of us grew up watching (well, at least I did!). When I mention it to locals here, they’re always equal parts shocked and delighted: “Wait, Round the Twist actually made it to Belgium? Of all the Aussie shows, that weird lighthouse one?!”
The lighthouse that started it all
Growing up, I had no clue Round the Twist was Australian-made, let alone that its lighthouse actually existed. Australia itself was barely on my radar back then. Fast forward to living in Melbourne for five months, and somehow I still didn’t connect the dots that Split Point was just a short bus ride away from the city.
The spark finally hit during one of those classic rainy days on King Island. Outdoor plans were toast, so I hunkered down scrolling for something nostalgic to watch. Round the Twist popped up, and suddenly it all came rushing back — the creepy ghost stories, the terrible 90s fashion, that unforgettable theme song. Then the penny dropped: I’d been so close to this lighthouse during my mainland travels and somehow never made the pilgrimage. From that moment, visiting Split Point became a quiet personal mission.
My original plan was peak travel-nerd: find the lighthouse’s “living room” from the show and watch an episode right there on-site. Classic overthinking! Reality check — they only filmed exteriors at Split Point; all the interior magic happened in some Melbourne studio. Undeterred, I climbed all the way to the top for sweeping coastal views, wandered the surrounding cliffs, and settled into a nearby café to watch my episode with the lighthouse still in sight. Close enough to feel like I’d stepped into the show itself.
A little Day-trip:
The weather gods smiled down — clear skies, perfect light, waves crashing just right. Naturally, I couldn’t leave without filming a little travel video, complete with the original intro music from the series. Had to be quirky and strange, right? What else fits a lighthouse famous for Australia’s weirdest kids’ show?
Climbing those spiral stairs and looking out over the endless ocean, I couldn’t help but grin. Sometimes the smallest detours — chasing childhood TV memories along a famous Australian road — turn into the best travel days.
