Soon after we went to sleep yesterday evening, it started to rain — and it didn’t stop all night. Several times we woke up to the heavy sound of rain on the tent. It felt disappointing; we’d been so lucky with the weather so far, and the thought of walking 14 km to Ryan’s Den in the rain didn’t sound very appealing.
When we woke up this morning, we had the nicest surprise. The sun was shining, and the warmth inside the tent actually woke us up. It was probably the first night on the trail that didn’t feel cold. My sleeping bag has definitely proven too light for this hike, so I’ll need to invest in a warmer one — especially since I still plan to do some walking in Tasmania later in my travels.
The Great Ocean Walk Family
Since Claire joined the family yesterday (yes, our little hiking family of two, haha), it was now the three of us on the trail. Before setting off again, we waited for our tents to dry. The sun was bright, the air was warm, and those views made it easy to sit back and take our time. Nothing really mattered today — it was going to be a gentle day of walking and relaxing.
Once we got going, we passed through beautiful Victorian countryside. The path was mostly uphill, but we took it in stride. It was day six, our packs were getting lighter, our bodies had adjusted, and with perfect weather, nothing could stop us on our way to Ryan’s Den.
The day got even better halfway through. People living near the track had left a small roadside setup where you could exchange little items — something hikers call “trail magic.” I didn’t expect to come across that on the Great Ocean Walk, so it was an awesome surprise. Later, when we reached a beach section, we took a quick shower in a river. It was freezing, but it felt amazing!
