Yesterday evening, after a long bus ride, I arrived in the little country-city called Rockhampton. While researching places to travel to in Cairns., other backpackers told me not to come here. “Rockhampton? Nobody goes there, and there’s nothing to see!” But I wanted my east coast adventure to be different from all the other travellers.
I love exploring places where supposedly “there’s nothing to see.” Or at least, that’s what other backpackers say—people who’ve never actually visited and are just repeating what they’ve heard. As a backpacker and, more importantly, as a traveller, I’m convinced there’s something to discover everywhere. Even if people insist there isn’t, I’d rather see for myself! At least when I tell someone a place is dull, I can say I’ve actually been there.
Rockhampton
The first thing I did after arriving—and it’s almost becoming a first-day ritual now—was to wander through the botanical gardens and explore the other parks. My first-day routine, also turning into a classic, includes checking out historic buildings and the art gallery. There’s something special about wandering around places I’ve never been to before.
Overall, I had a wonderful day. It might not be the most exciting place, but I’ve extended my stay by two nights to make sure I can say that with confidence. Actually, “not exciting” isn’t even the right description. Those botanical gardens were spectacular, and the hostel (which is excellent, with super-friendly hosts) had an event planned for the evening.
I wasn’t particularly keen on the event, but I decided to go since it’s a big deal in Rockhampton. Bull riding and using animals for entertainment isn’t really my thing. Still, it was interesting to experience a typical live-action Rockhampton bull-riding show! First day in Rockhampton: complete! Regrets about coming here? Not at all!
