If anything could define this day, it would be the abrupt change of scenery. In the morning, I woke up sleeping in a cave. By evening, I was back in Kuala Lumpur. Everything that happened in between summed up the last six months in summary.
Since it was my last official day of travelling, I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. Making this trip on the edge of returning to Australia turned out to be a great idea. The change of scenery will feel even more profound when I arrive in Melbourne—but that’s more good than bad.
A change of scenery
We woke up in the cave we had hiked to yesterday. Although we didn’t sleep much—wildlife kept waking us up through the night—it was still a great experience. Our group had breakfast together, and after packing our bags, we continued walking through the forest.
Since it was only a two-day tour, we made our way back to Taman Negara. But first, we stopped by the river, where we all went for a swim before taking the boat back. From there, things moved quickly. I grabbed my backpack and said goodbye to our adventurous group.
Sarah and I stopped at a small bar for a beer and one last goodbye. Things had just clicked perfectly between us, and I would have loved to travel longer with her. But I was already on my way to the next adventure—nothing could stop me now.
That was it. I took a taxi to the bus stop, caught a bus to Kuala Lumpur, then a train to my hostel. It was the same hostel I had stayed at six months earlier, and the receptionist even remembered me.
The circle felt complete. In a single day, I had condensed six months of travelling—I woke up in a cave, trekked through the rainforest, swam in a river, said goodbye to friends, spent hours on public transport, and returned to a city I already knew. That definitely counts as a change of scenery.
