Animal cruelty, Cooking Classes and Swimming Pools | Yogyakarta | Vlog 137 and 138

It’s a curious feeling to experience, even slightly unsettling at times. When travelling, once you spend five days in the same place, it begins to feel like home. You find yourself returning to the same spot after each day of exploring. You start recognizing the people who work there and some of their fellow guests. The area becomes familiar, and your dorm room transforms into your personal space, with belongings spread out like in your own room. This happened to me in Australia, and I experienced it again during days five and six in Yogyakarta. Those two days, however, were completely different from each other. The first day began with a cooking class in Yogyakarta.

Yogyakarta: Cooking Class

Yesterday, I booked an activity that’s become trendy among tourists in Asia—my first time trying it. Yogyakarta proved to be an excellent choice for a cooking class. I joined this experience with some friends I’d made here, making it the perfect way to spend my last day of exploring. In the morning, we visited a couple of local markets to gather all the ingredients for our meals. We had a wonderful time, and our hosts were incredibly knowledgeable, explaining everything thoroughly.

In the afternoon, I ventured out to explore some markets on my own. I wasn’t comfortable seeing caged animals and even dyed animals on display. Unfortunately, this practice is part of the local Asian culture, which is why I still wanted to witness it firsthand.

Day six was completely different from day five. No more cooking classes in Yogyakarta—I only left the hostel for a farewell dinner and drinks with the friends I’d made. The rest of the day was dedicated to paperwork and research. I know it sounds mundane when written like this, but I actually worked outdoors, right by the swimming pool, taking a refreshing swim every half hour! That certainly makes it sound more appealing!

This marks a turning point in my travels, as I’ve started applying and researching job opportunities in Melbourne. I’m having an incredible time here, but I’ll soon be heading to Victoria, Australia, on my working holiday visa, and I want to be fully prepared!
