Day two of the Great Ocean Walk, and our night turned out to be quite an adventure. Exhausted from our first day, we were happy to head to bed early. But suddenly, strange noises started coming from the forest. At first, we thought wild pigs were nearby, so we jumped out of the tent, ready to defend ourselves. It turned out, however, to be the sound koalas make! They were all around us, though we couldn’t see them in the dark. Everything was fine in the end, but our plan to wake up early quickly fell apart. We slept in, enjoyed a long breakfast, and waited for the rain to pass before starting our 12 km hike to Blanket Bay.
Our disappointment at not seeing the koalas at night proved unnecessary. With daylight, they were everywhere — we just had to look up into the trees. It was a nice distraction, especially since much of the day’s path led through forest fire trails, which weren’t particularly scenic. In good weather it might have been better, but everything was muddy and dim. Still, it was a refreshing change after busy Melbourne life! We truly enjoyed being outdoors and on the move again.
As we neared Blanket Bay, we could catch glimpses of the ocean through the trees. Unfortunately, by the time we arrived, it was already getting dark. I also managed to slip on the stairs — too focused on filming the incredible views! I’ll definitely include Jesse’s view of that moment in the after-movie.
A short stroll along the beach rounded off the day, followed by dinner and conversations with other walkers at the campsite. Our bodies were sore, but that hardly mattered — we’re having far too much fun to care!
