What would you do when a six-month journey is about to come to an end? Well, my new Belgian friend, Sarah, and I found the perfect solution. Before heading to Melbourne and being surrounded by crowds and city streets again, I wanted to get as far away from that as possible. Our answer? Leaving the Cameron Highlands behind and escaping deep into the Malaysian rain-forest.
And we’re doing it in style! For Sarah, this is only the halfway point of her trip — she’ll soon be joined by other friends from Belgium. For me, though, this marks the final chapter of an adventure that will stick with me for a lifetime. My travels won’t stop in Australia; they’ll simply shift into a new chapter — one where I’ll work while continuing to travel.
Into the Malaysian Rainforest
The bus that took us out of the Cameron Highlands wasn’t exactly luxurious, and neither was the boat that followed — but that’s what made it an adventure. The ride, a three-hour journey by river, brought us to Taman Negara, a small town tucked deep in the Malaysian rainforest. From here, we’re heading out for a two-day jungle trek. Isn’t that exciting? I’ll be stepping straight from the rainforest into the big city of Melbourne, with a quick stop in Kuala Lumpur along the way.
After arriving, we spent some time exploring the town that will be our base for the next few days. We’ve dropped off our bags and are saving the jungle adventure for tomorrow. Tonight, we’re joining the other travellers for a few beers and soaking in the atmosphere. It feels a lot like Bukit Lawang — but in true Malaysian rainforest style, not Indonesian. Hard to describe, but take my word for it!
