I’ve been diving on the Great Barrier Reef for those that missed yesterday’s post! Diving, as in, I finished my diving course, and I got a PADI Open Water Certification in my hands! It made me incredibly happy, as it was one of the biggest things on my bucket list! Happy Yentl here in Australia! The experience also came out of nowhere. It started with some loose thoughts after snorkelling on the west coast. I couldn’t hold myself as soon as I got here. How else was I going to see the Great Barrier Reef? I’m happy that I did it! It was a great experience, and I’m ready to dive again soonish. But today, something else, I’m exploring Mount Whitfield Park!
Another thing that Cairns is famous for is the rainforest. North of Cairns, you can find one of the oldest forests in the world. Unfortunately, my diving course got into my budget. Also, my over-budget trip along the west coast comes on top of that.
I could do better when sticking to a backpacker’s budget. Doing a tour up north might get in the way of doing other things along the east coast. I’m also starting to plan some stuff I can do, and I might save the walks for Tasmania later in my travels.
Nothing to worry about because I’ve been asking some locals about my options. They suggested walking around in the forests surrounding Cairns. They are very similar, just a little less famous. Being a bit tired from my course in diving, I chose to take it easy and stay within walking distance from Cairns.
I went hiking in Mount Whitfield Park and made a 22 km trail! It wasn’t a resting day like I imagined, but it felt good at the moment, so why not! I like hiking more than I did in Belgium, and that’s because I have fewer things to do. Interesting change, but a great one!
