Today promises to be a busy day for me in Bandung. I’m embarking on a road trip to Central Java! Yesterday’s experience of driving around and exploring the greater area was fantastic, and I discovered so many places I want to visit. I arranged for a driver yesterday evening, so I was picked up early this morning since most of my destinations are several hours away.
Sitting on the back of a scooter for an extended period will be challenging, but it also means exploring the remote regions of Indonesia that I would otherwise never reach. The destinations on my itinerary serve as guidelines, and the journey between them is just as valuable. I’m out here discovering everything about Indonesia by experiencing all the small towns and natural landscapes along the way!
A Central Java Road Trip:
My first few stops on this Central Java road trip included visits to the most extensive tea plantations in the area. I felt a bit guilty that my driver had to wait each time I wanted to wander through the fields. However, he seemed pleased to have secured one substantial job for the day rather than hunting for multiple small fares. This arrangement worked well for both of us!
Later, we ventured higher into the mountains. Thanks to Java’s abundant volcanic activity, there are numerous hot springs in this region. The water is naturally heated underground before rising to the surface, creating pools that are ideal for swimming and beneficial for the skin. My driver even took me to different hot springs than I had originally planned to visit. While the locations on my itinerary were well-known tourist spots, he insisted that better ones exist—known only to locals. What a fantastic recommendation!
Located approximately 50km south of Bandung, you’ll discover the renowned White Crater. Known locally as the Kawah Putih site, it sits at roughly 2430 meters above sea level and features a lake within the volcanic crater. However, this isn’t a lake suitable for swimming—the water is extremely acidic. Depending on the sulphur concentration, the water’s color shifts between blue, white, and green, or a blend of all three. Standing at the summit of the volcano was absolutely breathtaking! No Central Java road trip, immersed in volcanic landscapes, would feel complete without reaching the top of a volcano. That pungent sulphur smell, though—it truly penetrates your senses and creates an unforgettable memory!
