Walking the Great Ocean Walk | Hitch-hiking back to Melbourne | Vlog 9

There was one thing we hadn’t really thought about before starting this hike. All our preparation focused on the walk itself, but we never planned what to do afterwards. “Problems for after the hike,” we said. Well, now it’s after the walk, and here we are! How do we get back to our hostel in Melbourne?

We charged our phones at the campsite and checked the bus timetables to the city. But after hitchhiking to Port Campbell yesterday, we decided to try our luck with hitchhiking again. Buses felt too convenient. We’re on a trip and have a few extra days — no rush. If we didn’t make it back today, the worst-case scenario was camping another night. That didn’t sound bad at all. Worth the shot!

It was raining, but we didn’t care. The adventure mattered more than the weather. After spending the last week outdoors, we were well-prepared for anything. Hitchhiking back was funny — just yesterday, we’d waited ages for a ride from the Twelve Apostles to Port Campbell, and now we were heading the opposite way. Still, we made it — at least back to the Apostles!

Getting a lift from the Twelve Apostles to Apollo Bay turned out to be easy. We stopped there for lunch and laughed about the whole experience. It had taken us eight days to walk the distance from Apollo Bay to the Apostles, yet only an hour to drive it back. In the end, we managed to do both — walking and driving it! #goals

From Apollo Bay, though, getting to Melbourne was tougher. We waited for hours in the rain, but we refused to give up. At last, a man stopped who was driving all the way to one of Melbourne’s northern suburbs. We offered to cover some fuel money since it was more than a four-hour drive. On the way, we passed an IKEA — the perfect spot for dinner after such a long day. Of course, we couldn’t resist wandering through the store with our backpacks still on!

Afterwards, we caught the train into the CBD and finally arrived back in Melbourne, checking into our hostel again. And that’s it — what a trip! I couldn’t love these last nine days more. They were absolutely perfect.
