The focus of today’s itinerary is exploring the bridges of Bukit Lawang. I said yesterday, let the journey begin, but I actually have to wait two days for my guide to be available. That’s the downside of wanting to follow my own itinerary — but I’ll happily take it. In the meantime, I’m spending my days exploring Bukit Lawang itself.
Besides visiting the bridges, I’ll also hike a few trails close to town. It’s such a great destination, and I’m glad I convinced myself to come here. I am a bit nervous about leaving my backpack — including my laptop — in town while doing the big hike, but that’s just part of the adventure.
Apart from my computer, I have a few other valuables in my backpack. Still, if someone wants to take something, there are people carrying far more expensive items than I ever would. Let’s hope everything stays safe.
The bridges of Bukit Lawang
The town is divided by a large river flowing out of the rainforest. I say divided, but only on a map — in reality, there are so many bridges that they’ve become a bit of a local feature. All of them are built from ropes and wood, giving each a unique charm. Some feel a little more stable than others, but they all have character, and I’m enjoying finding my favorite one.
It’s day 161, which means my year of working and living in Australia is just three weeks away from ending. I’m currently in the middle of the Sumatra rainforest, and in three weeks I’ll be living in Melbourne. At this point, it’s almost hard to picture.
I’m not exactly sure where I’ll live yet, but I’ll need to find work soon as I’m running very low on money. It makes sense after six months of traveling, but still — living in Melbourne won’t be cheap either.
