Today was full of sightseeing in and around Bogor. First thing in the morning, I went to the city centre. I did skip that for the first two days as those centres are typical for Asian countries. They are hectic. In addition, arriving in Bogor, I wanted to see the Botanical Gardens first. Finding a place to eat was hard in the centre as it is Ramadan here. Most people do not eat during the day, so finding places to eat out while the sun is up can get pretty tricky.
A little anecdote on Bogor; because of Ramadan, it’s not only hard to get food during the day, but alcohol, in general, is also tough to find. So, when I asked in the hostel if they had a beer for me, I got taken on the scooter to a dark basement somewhere. They didn’t want to walk in themselves but pointed at a door, saying beer. Initially, I was a little scared, but then I reminded myself how nicely they treated me in the hostel. When I walked through the door, I found a beer stock and a guy selling it. It felt dodgy, but hey, I had my beers!
Bogor Palace
In the afternoon, I went to Bogor Palace. Unfortunately, I couldn’t go in. I wonder if that is just today or every day, but it seemed impossible to get in and have a tour. Bummer because that was my main attraction for the day.
Not visiting Bogor Palace meant I had more time to walk through some of Bogor’s suburbs. It is cool to walk and see how and where everybody lives. Besides, the Indonesian people are very kind and always willing to talk. That I love to speak was well-known long before my travels. My travels taught me many life lessons, but one of them is sure that I like to walk around a lot.
In the evening, I returned to the Gardens for food at the restaurant. As I said before, the people are very social here, and it didn’t take long for me to have other people around to dine together.
