Hitch-hiking from Gladstone to Agnes Water

It’s my second day of hitchhiking, and today, I’ve made it from Gladstone into Agnes Water. It took me a couple of rides to get here, but everybody on the way was super friendly! Once I arrived at the hostel, I made friends as soon as I walked in. Usually, backpackers only come in when the bus stops here once a day. So, when I got here, I drew attention immediately.

Everybody started asking me about my hitchhiking adventure, and five minutes later, I was out with them, exploring the beaches. Getting rides in Australia is not a common thing to do. I didn’t know, and after hitching through Europe, I didn’t think about it. It seemed very normal to me! I should have watched a little bit more Wolf Creek.

Next on the checklist of things I wanted to do, was the Kangaroo sanctuary. All the kangaroos that get hit on the roads around Agnes Water are brought here. In the shelter, they take care of them until they are good enough to be re-released. Roadkill is a widespread thing in Australia. They are everywhere here, and since it’s dangerous to avoid them, Australia even suggests hitting them! It’s unlike in Belgium, where you are lucky to see a wild animal.

It was a good day, and I even fed a kangaroo. Also, this hostel is fantastic. Over the last three months, it’s probably one of the best I’ve been in so far! I love it when daily life is all centred outside. The weather is pretty good all year round, which makes that possible. I’ve only booked a short stay here, but that might change. We will see what happens!
