Yesterday evening, after a long bus ride, I arrived in the little country city called Rockhampton. Other backpackers told me not to come here while researching places to travel to in Cairns. Rockhampton? Nobody goes there, and there is nothing to see! But I want my east coast adventure to be different from all the other travellers.
I like to explore places where there is nothing to see. Or that is what other backpackers say and hear from others and never went to look for themselves. As a backpacker and, even better, a traveller, I’m sure there is something to see everywhere. Even if people say there is not, I’d like to see that myself! At least when I tell someone that an area is dull, I’ve visited the place beforehand.
The first thing I did after arriving, and it’s almost getting a first-day classic story now, I went wandering around the botanical gardens and the other parks. Besides, my first-day exploring part, also becoming a classic, is checking out the historic buildings and the art gallery. Exploring and wandering around in places I’ve never been to is nice.
In general, I had a great day. It might not be the most exciting place, but I’ve booked myself two nights longer to ensure that I can say that with good reasons. Not exciting; it isn’t even the correct thing to say. Those botanical gardens were terrific, and the hostel (which is excellent with some super-friendly hosts) had an event planned in the evening.
I wasn’t a big fan of the event but decided to go, as this is a big thing in Rockhampton. Bull riding and using animals for fun entertainment is not my thing. But it was good to see a typical live-action Rockhampton bull-riding show! First day in Rockhampton; check! Regrets for coming here? Not at all!
