I’m finally on Fraser Island! This destination tops even the Whitsundays or Rottnest Island and has been one of my most anticipated destinations.. The island is also known by its Indigenous name, K’gari, a name given by the island’s original Butchulla inhabitants.
Destinations like these were exactly what inspired me to start travelling Australia. And what a place it is. Fraser Island is the world’s largest sand island and a World Heritage site. There are no roads on Fraser Island, so driving happens on the beach here in 4x4s. Even the planes leave from the beach! I can’t wait to experience the next two days here!
Getting to Fraser Island:
The morning started with a pickup from my hostel in Noosa, , and from there, we made our way to Inskip Point. The ferry ride to the island was the perfect start to the adventure—as I always say, if your day begins with a ferry, you’re in for something special! I chose a tour that emphasizes driving over lingering at viewpoints, which was perfect since I’d never experienced driving sand.
What an incredible first day! The tour group has been wonderful, and we’ve been blessed with perfect weather. We packed so much into the day, visiting numerous stunning locations and enjoying countless memorable moments. Our itinerary included exploring the rainforest and cooling off in Eli Creek..
Later in the afternoon, we explored the iconic SS Maheno shipwreck along the coastline. To cap off this amazing day, we visited the “three B lakes” (I’m embarrassed to admit I can’t recall their exact names!), where we enjoyed a refreshing swim. The evening was spent gathered around a campfire with a guitar and wonderful company. Stay tuned for part two tomorrow!
