I am on Fraser Island! Even more than the Whitsundays or Rottnest Island, this is one of the big stops on my list. Fraser Island is also named K’gari, the Indigenous name in the Butchulla language from the island’s original inhabitants.
These islands are one of the reasons I started travelling within Australia in the first place! Welcome to the world’s largest sand– and also World-Heritage-listed island. There are no roads on Fraser Island, so driving happens on the beach here in 4x4s. Even the planes leave from the beach! It’s going to be a great two days here, no doubt!
Getting to Fraser Island:
This morning, I got picked up from my hostel in Noosa, and we drove to Inskip point. From there, we took the ferry to get to the island! I’ve said it before, but if your day starts with a ferry, you are in for a good time! I booked a tour that mainly focuses on driving instead of spending a lot of time at all viewpoints. Since I’ve never gone in a car on the sand before, that would be a great experience.
I had a great first day! The people on my tour are lovely, and the weather is also in our favour! It was such a full day; we drove around many places and did many fun things. We went to check out the rainforest first to have some fun in Eli Creek afterwards!
This afternoon, we also had some time to explore the SS Maheno, a shipwreck along the coastline. To finish this great day, we drove to the three B lakes (three lakes starting with a B, I forgot the names, sorry!), where we had time for a swim! In the evening we spent time around a campfire with a guitar and some fantastic people! Part two will follow tomorrow!
