The Great Ocean Road is a classic traveller‘s road trip along the western coast of Victoria. It is a popular destination for backpackers, and there are even day tours from Melbourne showing the best spots along the drive. The only problem with doing it by car is that you miss out on many fabulous places. The only way to get to these places is by walking them. Since arriving in Melbourne, I have planned to walk the Great Ocean Road instead of driving it. Later, I found out about the official Great Ocean Walk trail, a 104 km walk going from Apollo Bay to the 12 apostles, and things just came together like a puzzle.
It took Jesse and me a couple of days to prepare for this trip. We had to plan and buy everything we needed for eight days of walking. A few shops are on the way, except for a coffee place at Cape Otway. We also had to take time off in the hostel and work extra shifts to leave our stuff there. But we got there, and with our heavy backpacks, we left Melbourne this morning to get to the start of the trail in Apollo Bay. First, we took the train to Geelong, which is about halfway and from there, the bus to Apollo Bay. Our last coffee and a meal, and we can start our adventure!
The first day of walking was hard. Both of us didn’t do any training, and we were living a backpacker’s dream in Melbourne, going out very often does that mean. The 10 km today felt twice as long. Walking next to the road was easy, but it got tricky once we had to walk through the sand and on wet stones. But, in saying that, it was a terrific day. We are both so happy to be here and to have a break from city life. Once we got on the track, we didn’t see or pass anyone. It is all ours, and we love it! The views between Apollo Bay and Elliot Ridge were excellent, and it was only the first day! More updates will follow soon!
