Walking the Great Ocean Walk | Apollo Bay to Elliot Ridge | Vlog 1

The Great Ocean Road is a classic traveller‘s road trip along the western coast of Victoria. It’s a popular destination for backpackers, and there are even day tours from Melbourne showcasing the best spots along the drive. The only problem with doing it by car is that you miss out on many incredible places — the kind you can only reach on foot.

Since arriving in Melbourne, I’ve planned to walk the Great Ocean Road instead of driving it. Later, I discovered the official Great Ocean Walk trail — a 104 km route stretching from Apollo Bay to the Twelve Apostles — and everything just fell perfectly into place.

It took Jesse and me a couple of days to prepare for the trip. We had to plan carefully and buy everything we’d need for eight days of walking. There aren’t many shops along the way, apart from a small coffee place at Cape Otway. We also needed to take some time off in the hostel and work extra shifts to leave our belongings there. But we managed it, and with our heavy backpacks, we left Melbourne this morning, heading to the start of the trail in Apollo Bay. First, we took the train to Geelong — about halfway — and then the bus to Apollo Bay. After one last coffee and meal, we were ready to begin our adventure.

The first day of walking was tough. Neither of us did any training beforehand, and we had been fully enjoying the backpacker’s lifestyle in Melbourne — going out a bit too often, you could say. The 10 km felt twice as long! Walking beside the road was fine, but once we hit the sand and wet stones, things got tricky. Still, it was an amazing day. We’re both so happy to be here and to take a break from city life. Once we got onto the track, we didn’t see a single person — it was all ours, and we loved it! The views between Apollo Bay and Elliot Ridge were absolutely stunning, and this was only day one. More updates will follow soon!
