Adelaide baby! | Welcome to South Australia

Touched down in Adelaide — “Radelaide” as the locals affectionately call it — and I’ve officially entered my second-to-last of Australia’s eight states and territories. This marks my very first time in South Australia, and the excitement is genuinely electric. That pure joy of travelling to completely new places has returned, with fresh accents filling the air, unfamiliar streets unfolding ahead, and endless adventures waiting just around the corner. It’s the perfect midway point before reaching the final state that will complete my Australian journey.

I’ve settled into North Adelaide for the next few nights (this time with Avalon!), and it’s an absolutely perfect base for discovering the city center. Both the iconic Adelaide Oval and the lush Botanical Gardens sit just a comfortable walk from my bed, making early morning exploration effortless. However, the real magnetic pull lies just beyond the urban edges — those legendary Adelaide Hills that everyone’s been raving about. Travelers keep sharing incredible stories about the hiking tracks winding through towering eucalyptus forests, past cascading waterfalls, and offering breathtaking panoramic views of Adelaide that literally stop you in your tracks. My hiking boots are practically vibrating with anticipation.

Heysen Trail plans take shape.

At the top of my adventure list sits the mighty Heysen Trail — Australia’s epic 1,200km beast that slices through South Australia’s wildest landscapes. I’m not committing to the full thru-hike, but I’ve definitely picked out some of the most scenic sections to tackle. Let me be clear — this isn’t shade toward Heysen devotees at all. The trail’s legendary status is well-deserved and absolutely worth the effort for dedicated long-distance hikers. I’m simply prioritizing shorter, more intense hits during this visit.

What fascinates me most is how encountering a trail of that magnitude plants unexpected seeds. Suddenly I’m thinking, “Hmm, maybe something 1200km does appeal someday…” That thought hadn’t crossed my mind before, but now it’s simmering. Who knows where that particular itch might lead?

The bigger decisions loom on the horizon.

Exactly how long will I stay in Adelaide? That’s still very much up in the air. Winter’s chill deepens noticeably each day, signaling it’s time to keep the momentum rolling northward. Even bigger questions swirl around my visa situation — I’ve now almost spent two years in Australia, which arrives in just two months. This means plotting strategically, and one strong possibility involves flying to New Zealand for a refreshing break that resets my Australian visa clock. Plenty of more adventures fill the winter months regardless of the final itinerary.

I’ve already captured some fantastic travel videos during the journey here. Beyond that, I’m actively scheming about taking this website to its next evolution. Consistent posting has built solid momentum over these past few months, but I crave smarter organization, smoother navigation, and an even better experience for readers following along. Adelaide’s famously laid-back rhythm feels like the perfect environment for that deep creative work. I might extend my stay here specifically to lay those crucial foundations. Let’s see how it all unfolds.

Radelaide awaits! With this being my second-to-last state, every moment counts — Heysen Trail sections, Adelaide Hills magic, city discoveries, future plotting. The South Australia chapter begins now, and I can’t wait to share it all with you.
