I’m excited today (like almost every day, but still)— it’s day one of my rainforest trek in Bukit Lawang. I chose to do a personalized tour because I wasn’t too fond of the itineraries offered by the regular guided groups. Most of those tours only go up the hills surrounding Bukit Lawang and then return, but we’re heading much deeper into the forest. Let the search for wild Orangutans begin! If we’re lucky, we might even see elephants.
The day started with a long hike to get far enough into the rainforest to spot them. By lunchtime, we were already halfway through the trek and lucky enough to see an Orangutan move gracefully through the trees.
We saw baby Orangutans
The sight of moving Orangutan in the trees was nothing compared to what came later. Deeper in the forest, we were fortunate enough to encounter baby Orangutans — one even climbed right past us! I made sure to include some great footage in the video below.
To reach our campsite, we had to cross a wide river, and our sleeping spot turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The base was well set up, with small huts to sleep in and a nearby waterfall for a quick shower. I was completely enjoying the simple rainforest lifestyle. This trek has been fantastic — one of the most unique experiences of my travels so far.
Our tour guide advised us to tie all our belongings to nearby trees, as monkeys love to steal things — and once they vanish into the jungle, you won’t get them back! Rainforest or not, our guide brought wine to enjoy around the campfire. The evening was wonderfully relaxing, filled with cooking over a wood stove and sharing stories until it was time to sleep.
