It ‘s my third and final day in Bandung. This city is famous for its colonial and art-deco architecture. Besides, many people come here for shopping. My sightseeing tour in Bandung started with the markets and the Jalan Braga. After yesterday’s road trip through western Java, exploring the side trips out of Bandung, I’ll stay a bit closer to ‘home’ today.
Jalan Braga, the main shopping street, is full of cafes and stores that have been around since the colonial era. The street sits next to City Hall Park, the most famous park in the city centre, filled with fountains and charming little gardens. Afterwards, I visited the Gedung Sate, a 1920’s Dutch colonial building that once served as the seat of the Dutch East Department. Today, it houses the office of the governor of West Java province.
Sightseeing in Bandung
In the afternoon, I planned a trip to one of the giant strawberry plantations around Bandung. However, since I was meeting my driver at the Alun-Alun Kota, I stopped there first. The Alun Kota is the most iconic square in the city and a popular gathering spot for locals. It’s also situated next to the Masjid Raya, a Mosque renowned for its twin minarets—the largest in the city.
After the strawberry plantation—a trip that took longer than expected—there was still one more item on my itinerary. No sightseeing trip in Bandung would be complete without visiting the memorial to the liberation struggle. My final stop was the Monumen Perjuangan Rakyat Jawa Barat. The park surrounding the monument was vast, and I would have loved to explore it more thoroughly if it hadn’t been for the rain. Fortunately, I had my rain jacket with me, but I felt bad about keeping my driver waiting. Since it had already been a wonderful day, I decided to head back to my cozy homestay.
