Change of Plans! | It is a nightmare trying to travel in a pandemic :D

Only a week after sharing my newly made travel plans, I already have a little update — and a major change of direction. Sometimes travel is about being ready to move, and sometimes it’s about knowing when not to.

Just as I was packing to leave King Island and return to Melbourne, the rise of new COVID‑19 cases in Victoria made that option disappear overnight. Borders were tightening again, and once I left Tasmania, there was a big chance I wouldn’t be able to get back in.

Having waited almost two years to finally explore Tasmania, I couldn’t take that risk. Getting stuck on the mainland right now would mean losing the chance to see the places I’ve been dreaming about this whole time.

Goodbye Melbourne — for now

I had everything lined up: a flight to Melbourne, a plan to catch up with friends, maybe a couple of days building my route before heading south. I was even picturing the first coffee back at United Backpackers. But plans rarely go the way we expect them to, especially in a year that’s made uncertainty feel like the new normal.

This morning, I cancelled the Melbourne ticket and re‑booked last‑minute to Hobart. Instead of detouring through the city, I’ll be flying straight from King Island to Tasmania’s capital. It wasn’t what I pictured, but it’s definitely the smarter option.

It also means my itinerary will be made as I go — no fixed plans, no pre‑booked tours, just curiosity and a map that will probably fall apart halfway through. I’ve travelled that way before, and truthfully, it often leads to the best stories.

Tasmania may not be the easiest place to navigate, with its limited public transport and wide stretches of nothing between coastal towns, but that’s exactly what makes it worth it. Besides, if anything goes wrong, I know I have a safety net back on King Island — my old job, familiar faces, and the island warmth that already feels like home.

One last day on King Island

Because of the sudden switch, I get to spend one more full day on the island. It feels like an unexpected gift — a final walk down to Currie Harbour, another chance to say a proper goodbye to friends before boarding the plane tomorrow morning.

There’s something poetic about leaving from the same small runway that brought me here over a year ago — this time not to chase visa days, but to chase adventure again.

So here’s how it looks now:

  • Today: last sunset on King Island 🌅
  • Tomorrow: flying to Hobart, Tasmania ✈️
  • Next: discovering where the road — or dirt track — leads.

The catching‑up I’d planned for Melbourne will have to wait, but there’s something freeing about knowing I’ll be starting this next chapter with nothing but open time and open roads. If travel has taught me anything, it’s that the best journeys rarely go according to plan. So yes — this is a change of plans, not a cancellation, and possibly the best change I could imagine.
