Life-changing event: I bought hiking poles | Rockhampton | Vlog 82

As I’ve mentioned before and if you’ve been following these daily vlogs, you’ve probably noticed: I’m hiking more than ever. It makes perfect sense while travelling—it’s an excellent way to explore new areas. Plus, it’s the cheapest option available. Hiking has become a significant part of my travels now. Wherever I go, I find myself on a trail! I genuinely enjoy it, which is why today I took it a step further and bought myself a pair of hiking poles. With an extra-hard hike planned ahead, I thought: if not now, then probably never.

Hiking in Rockhampton

Today is day two in Rockhampton, and I have a 24km hike planned to explore the area. This will be my first experience using hiking poles—I’ve never tried them before. The adjustment period was short, but they made my day significantly easier. Hiking poles are more expensive than I initially expected, but that’s typical for quality gear I’m happy that I bought them, they served me well on my first day, and I’m sure this will be the start of even more hikes!

The hike turned out to be quite long—I spent most of the day walking and taking in the stunning views. By the time I returned to the hostel, I was completely exhausted. There wasn’t much happening in the evening, so I took the opportunity to rest. This is a good sign—I’m confident it will help me sleep well tonight..

The hostel is fairly quiet, and I might be fortunate enough to have the dorm room to myself tonight. I’ve been almost three months into this journey, and most nights (except during my west coast adventure), I’ve been sleeping in bunk beds. Not a bad way for a 25-year-old to experience the world. I’m loving it!
