I couldn’t tell you why, but, at first, I thought there wasn’t much to do and see in Medan. I had to turn that opinion quickly as I loved travelling and exploring the area. There is much to do and see in Medan. Not that it was my best stop in Sumatra, but if I had to spend another couple of days here, I wouldn’t be sad and know precisely how to fill that time.
There is always more to see, so I had to pick the two things I wanted to see the most. There was only a little time today. I had to take the train in the afternoon, taking me to the airport. Tonight is the end of my trip through Java, Bali and Sumatra. I’m flying back to Malaysia as I’m going to Melbourne from Kuala Lumpur in less than two weeks.
To do and see in Medan:
First, I’m heading to see the Tjong A Fie Mansion. It is one of the top attractions in Medan. The house gives a great view of how rich people lived in the city during the 1900s. In addition, there is plenty of historical information to find. Tjong A Fie, for example, was the major of the Medan Chinese community. No wonder the house and its decorations are luxurious. Besides, it must have been one of the loveliest gardens I’ve seen so far in Sumatra.
My last stop in Medan was the Istana Maimun. Staying in the atmosphere of leading houses, this was the royal palace of Medan, belonging to the Sultanate of Deli. Nowadays, it is open to the public as it has been turned into a museum.
Now, I was surprised to find out there was a big wedding party going on. There might have been a sign, but they didn’t write that in English. Consequently, with my camera, I walked into a wedding party, and as a ‘white man’ in Indonesia, there was no way of hiding it. Nevertheless, the married couple was happy to make me part of the party, and I was invited to eat and drink as much as I wanted. If only I didn’t have to fly out in the evening.
