Last week, while travelling around Victoria, I fulfilled a little childhood dream. I took the bus from Melbourne to Aireys Inlet and visited the Split Point Lighthouse beside the Great Ocean Road.
Split Point lighthouse wouldn’t immediately ring a bell for most people, but the chances are that you have seen it before. It is the Round The Twist lighthouse. Yes, the featured lighthouse for that weird iconic Australian series we used to watch when we were younger (or at least I did, haha). However, if I tell people here in Australia, they are amazed Round The Twist made it to Belgium. Really? From all series that we produced here? That strange lighthouse series?
Round The Twist Lighthouse
I didn’t know that Round The Twist was an Australian series back in the day. Even better, I probably didn’t know about Australia back then. And even more, I lived in Melbourne for five months and still didn’t know.
But while living on King Island, there was this one rainy day when it was just not done to go outside. While sitting inside scrolling through some things to watch, I re-discovered Round The Twist. Not just the series itself but also how I got so close earlier to that iconic lighthouse but never went to see it. I couldn’t wait to go and visit the lighthouse at that moment.
My first plan was to go and sit in the lighthouse’s living room while watching one of the episodes. I should have known, but they only filmed the lighthouse from the outside. The living room only ever existed in a studio somewhere in Melbourne. I went to the top of the lighthouse and watched my episode in a cafe nearby.
It was a lovely day, and I decided to make a little after-movie with the original intro music from the show. Of course, my Travel Video had to be weird. What else would you expect?
