The I – IV – I – V – I progression in major chords!
Besides being a guitar and drum teacher on King Island, I also teach piano classes. One of my students wanted to learn everything about chord progressions, whether jazz or classical. So, we started going over the basics of building, first standard chords and adding the ‘jazz notes’ afterwards. After getting most of the major and minor chords fluent, we practised different chord progressions in simple tonalities. As for my latest task, I asked my student to study the I – IV – I – V – I progression in all the major chords and tonalities.
During the week, my student got lost in this exercise, so I decided to help. I’m not the biggest fan of making cheat sheets, but I knew it would help my student greatly. Instead of focusing on the I – IV – I – V – I progression in major chords, she could now play the chords themselves. However, it’s essential to add that the cheat sheet is only there to help at the start. Playing these progressions should eventually become part of the general knowledge.
Since I’ve made the sheet, I’m happy to share it here on my website. I will add it to the educational section. If it can be helpful for one of my students, it can also benefit someone else. Feel free to download and print or spread. I rather have this helping more people than sit untouched on my computer forever.
