The I – IV – I – V – I progression in major chords!
Besides being a guitar and drum teacher on King Island, I also teach piano classes. One of my students recently wanted to dive deep into chord progressions — from classical to jazz. So, we started by building standard chords and later added the typical “jazz notes.”
After becoming comfortable with most major and minor chords, we moved on to practising chord progressions in simple tonalities. For the latest assignment, I asked my student to study the I–IV–I–V–I progression in all major keys.
During the week, she got a bit lost in the exercise, so I decided to lend a hand. I’m normally not a big fan of cheat sheets, but in this case, I knew it would make a real difference. By using the chart, she could focus on playing the chords directly instead of constantly figuring them out. Of course, I reminded her that the cheat sheet is only there to help at the beginning — these progressions should eventually become part of her musical vocabulary.
Since I had already made the sheet, I thought it would be great to share it here on my website. I’ll add it to the educational section. If it can help one of my students, it might just help others too! Feel free to download, print, and share it — I’d rather see it being used than sitting untouched on my computer.
