Music theory for Intermediate Students – Exercises (Part 1)
The first part of these music theory exercises covers several different activities. The first exercise is to name the note names and the song’s tonality. Watch out because all these exercises are written in the bass clef. The second exercise asks to add bars for a melody given in 4/4. I suggest reading these exercises in note names and rhythmically if that works well. We dive a little deeper into chord structures to end this first part. Multiple chords are given, and the student must decide whether these are major or minor. Have fun!
Music theory for Intermediate Students – Exercises (Part 2)
The second part of these music theory exercises is slightly more complex than the first. The start exercise gives a key signature, and the student must name the major and minor tonality. The second exercise turns this around, and the student has to write down the key signature for the given key. Part two continues with a rhythmical reading exercise. Watch out; the piece is written in 2/2, which means half-time reading! Another interval exercise must be solved, with more complex intervals than in the music theory for beginners, followed by a recap of the major or minor chord exercises.
About me:
Over the past few years, I have taught music theory at various music schools in both Australia and Belgium. During these times, I’ve put plenty of different exercises on paper. This way, my students could practise at home and in the music lessons themselves. I’ve decided to put those exercises together to publish them here in the education section of my website. Over time, I lost many of them, but here is what was still on my online clouds. Besides that, my students can find them here if they want extra practice. It’s also downloadable for anyone. These exercises will be helpful to anyone in search of some music theory for intermediate students’ activities.
