Jesus Of Suburbia – Green Day
We suddenly started playing Green Day’s song Jesus Of Suburbia on one of many Yentl As Anything rehearsals. The song features a little but iconic drum solo by Green Day’s drummer Tre Cool. Our band’s drummer, Daniel, said he should look deeper into that solo to play it correctly. Coming home, I also wondered how Tre Cool built up that drum solo. Over the years, I played along multiple times with Jesus Of Suburbia but never played that solo correctly. So, to do our drummer and me a favour, I made a drum transcription for Jesus Of Suburbia. As I sent the solo to my drummer, I also decided to publish it on my website! My educational section has been un-updated for a long time, and this was an excellent opportunity to add another drum transcription!
The song Jesus Of Suburbia is the fifth and final single from Green Day’s seventh studio album, American Idiot. While the music runs for about 9 minutes and 8 seconds, it is the band’s second-longest song. In addition, since that was radio unfriendly, they cut down the version to about 6 minutes for commercial purposes. Their longest song is also featured on the American Idiot album and is homecoming, which runs for 9 minutes and 18 seconds. In the first two sections of Jesus Of Suburbia, the drums imitate Ginger Baker and Charlie Watts, two English drummers from the 1960s. In addition to Charlie Watts, Tre Cool additionally pulled inspiration from Keith Moon and Alex Van Halen.
Below is the drum transcription for Jesus Of suburbia and the five movements of the song:
